Materials Needed for Dolch Primer {Brights}:
Getting Dolch Primer {Brights} Ready:
Dolch Primer {Brights} is full of an assortment of activities and centers, therefore, preparation will vary. I will do a quick rundown of component of this bundle.
Word Wall Alphabet Labels
This makes for a great visually stimulating bulletin board in the classroom for students to refer to throughout the year. Print on cardstock and laminate for extra durability. Place somewhere on the wall where students can refer to it throughout the day. I prefer using mounting tabs to stick to the wall. These are reliable and leave no mess when you remove them. You can also use double sided tape. As you teach the different sight words, place the cards below underneath the corresponding letter. There are two formats; all black font, or blue consonants and red vowels.
Word of the Day
Print on cardstock and laminate for extra durability. Place the word of the day poster on the wall by the classroom door. I like using mounting tabs to secure things to the wall. Place one of the sight word cards on the poster each day. When leaving the classroom, have the students look at the word, say the word, spell the word, and then say the word once more. You can also put all of the word cards on a ring and hang on the poster and easily rotate through to the next card each day.
Play Dough Mats
Print on cardstock and laminate for extra durability. This will allow you to resuse this activity for years to come. This is a great activity for literacy centers. Students can complete this activity in so many different ways, but here are two examples. 1) Provide students with several different colors of play doh and the mats. Students will roll out the play doh to fit into each letter. 2) Provide students with vis-a-vie markers. They will trace the letters for each word. The goal with both of these examples, will be to have students spelling out the sight words.
I Have, Who Has
Print on cardstock and laminate for extra durability. This way you can reuse for years to come. Pass out all of the cards to your students. Some students may end up with more than one card. Choose one student to start by reading the start card (labeled start). The student with the answer at the top of their card should read their entire card. The activity continues until you get to the finished card (labeled finish).
Dominoes
Print on cardstock and laminate for extra durability. This way you can reuse for years to come. This activity is great for word work centers. Place cards face down in a pile. Each player chooses seven cards. The remaining cards go into a pile to the side. The first player places card down, the other player tries to match up the word. If he or she does not have the word, they chose from the pile. The game is finished when a player uses all of his or her dominoes or no more matches can be made.
Interactive Sight Word Mats
This activity is great for word work centers. It is recommended that you print these out and laminate prior to use for extra durability. Students will use a vis-a-vie marker and letter manipulatives to complete these mats. 1) Say It: Students will say the sight word. 2) Build It: Students will use the provided letter cards (in build a word) or use letter manipulatives you have in your classroom. 2) Trace It: Students will trace the word with a vis-a-vie marker. 4) Say It: Students will read the sentence with the sight word highlighted. 5) Write It: Students will copy the previous sentence using a vis-a-vie marker. 6) Create It: Students will write their own sentence.
Roll, Read, and Rainbow
It is recommended that you laminate these so that you can reuse them, however, you can easily print a class set for everyone to do too. This activity is great for small groups or whole group practice. Pass out one sheet to each student along with one dice. Students will roll their dice. Whichever number they roll, they will read a word and cross out. They will continue this until they have a full section crossed out, the entire page is crossed out, or until time runs out.
Graph a Word
This activity is great for word work centers. You can either laminate these prior to use and students can use a vis-a-vie marker to complete or you can print on regular paper and have students complete using a pencil, pen, or crayon. Students will count how many words there are in the top box and then graph it in the bottom. For example, if they are looking for the word ‘run’ they would count that it is in the box five times. They would then color five boxes above the word ‘run’. This would be continued until all words have been counted and graphed.
Sight Word Sort Mats
This activity is great for word work centers. You will need to print a class set of the mat that you will want to use at the moment. There are four different sorting mats to choose from. Students can either use the small word cards provided for this activity or they can write their own words from the word wall to save paper.
Assessment
This document is perfect for continuously assessing student knowledge. When you assess a student, choose a marker color that will be used for everyone for that specific date. Have the student read the words from the page. If the student misses a word, mark it with the colored marker. Record the date and marker color at the bottom of the page. Next time you asses, choose a different color and complete the same process.
ABC Order
Print on cardstock and laminate for extra durability. This will also allow you to reuse year after year. Students will rewrite the eight words in the word bank in ascending ABC order. If this concept is new for students, complete whole group at first. Teach students to refer to the word wall to confirm letter order. Once the skill has been mastered, this activity can be placed into word work centers.
Tic-Tac-Toe
Print on cardstock and laminate for extra durability. This will also allow you to reuse year after year. This activity is great for small groups or whole group practice. Pass out one sheet to each student. Each student will choose their own nine sight words from the word wall. Have them write one word in each box. The teacher will call out sight words one at a time. If a student has the word that was called out, they place a large “X” over that box. The first person to get three in a row wins. If you laminate, have students complete this activity using a vis-a-vie marker.
Build-A-Word
Print on cardstock and laminate for extra durability. This way you can reuse for years to come. This activity is great for word work centers. Students will use the provided letter tiles (or letter manipulatives if you have them) to build sight words. Please note that if you use the provided letter tiles, you will need to print several pages of the letters so they will have enough letters to fill a page.
