I’ve always had a thing for Chex Mix. All the textures and flavors make it such a great snack. I decided to put a fall spin on it with this blend.

I had to re-home most of this stuff, asap. The amount that I ate ‘taste-testing’ my way through the 2 hours while it cooked wasn’t even funny :) I could have eaten it all too!

Chex Mix has been a MAJOR weakness for me BUT I had NO idea that I could make it in my crockpot! Now, to figure out how to not eat it all before it’s actually done cooking….Pinned!

Thanks for pinning and ” to figure out how to not eat it all before it’s actually done cooking” <--- I taste-tested my way through 2 solid hours of cooking, and every 15 minutes, I checked for quality control :)

Oh how happy I am that you decided to break out the crockpot. LOVE this recipe, Averie!

Wow, I’m in love with this recipe, Averie! I think this would last all of 2.5 seconds in my house. Looks incredible!

It was so good, Gayle! It didn’t last very long here, that is for sure!

Love that you made this mix in a crock pot! This is fantastic for the holidays! Pinned!

Thanks for pinning, you’re always so great, Anna!

I loved Chex Mix growing up! I still do love it, but I only ever see it at the holidays. I try to resist it then but since it is only around for a little bit….I usually cave.

Your description in the beginning sounds divine. I don’t use that word lightly, either.

This stuff, whoa, wow. It was…highly addicting. Re-homed, asap :) I think you’d love this!

I love that my crock pot would pretty much make this dessert for me! How easy is that. I am hooked on your blog because of the brilliant ideas you have for how to easily make really delicious food and dessert.

You are so sweet and thanks for the lovely compliments, Kate!

Chex mix in a crock pot?! Who knew! This looks like the chex mix to end all chex mixes! Holy addicting is right!

Beyond.addicting. YES!

Love love love this, pinned!

Thank you, Sue!

This is so creative and yummy looking! In a crockpot? Who knew?

Do you have any recommendations if you don’t have a crockpot? Would I just put it in the oven at a very low temp?

Yes, I’d go with a 250F oven and just keep tossing and keep a careful eye on it!

This sounds so addicting!!

LOVE that we both have slow cooker recipes! And I never really made anything dessert-like in a crockpot – maybe that’ll change with this one. Although it might be too dangerous to have this around the house – I would eat it all in a single night!

I had to re-home this stuff, pronto! This is my danger food too! And I love that we both have slow cooker recipes today! Great minds…. :)

Best game-day recipe EVER!! Love it, Averie!

Thanks, Todd!

how many ideas for sweet treats with nuts. Pumpkin spice fits perfectly to walnuts and hazelnuts :)

I know I’ve expressed this before, but WHY can’t I be your kids’ teacher? I’d love a bag of this!

Never thought of using the crock pot to make snack mix. It’s such a great idea!

Holy yum…I love home made chex mix…not the kind you buy in the store. For some reason I only make it at the Holidays…not sure why…could have something to do with my lack of self control…this recipe looks insanely good…luv all those flavors and the fact that it’s made in the crockpot is Genius. I’m going to make this for our next tailgating.

Oooh well if you do make it for your next tailgating, LMK what you think! And very good idea to make it for a group because you don’t need a batch lingering :)

When I was oven-less a couple of years ago I used my crockpot all the time–but I never knew I could make chex mix in it!! I’d have to take some to work and send the rest with my husband. We’d both do some damage to this stuff. Love the flavors and spices you chose for this!

I remember that oven-less stretch of yours! I still cannot believe how you managed with just a toaster oven and a crockpot and you made some of my dessert recipes in your toaster! Still amazed by that :)

And yes, this is the type of snack you NEED to bring to work or share with others! So tempting :)

Good lawdy, does this look addictive. Pass that bowl!

I would have never guessed that something like this could be made in a slow cooker. Love it.

Chex mix in a slow cooker, Say What!? Brilliance.

Oh my YUMMY Averie! This chex mix looks unreal and seriously addicting! :) Perfect for Xmas gifts!!

Salty sweet has my heart! I’d probably end up eating the whole thing.

Chex mix in a crock-pot – I love it! This looks amazing, but seems like a dangerous snack to have lying around the house…

Oh snap! Pumpkin spice AND they’re made in the crockpot? Done and done. Chex mix is my weakness!

I’m going for a long drive next weekend and this looks like the perfect treat to keep me satiated! Maple + pumpkin spice = heaven! The house must have smelt amazing!! Pinned

Mmmmm! This looks absolutely delish, Averie! I love that it’s made in the crockpot, it’s perfect for the holidays and love that it doesn’t tie up the stove! *pinned*

Helllooooo new fall snack!

Adding this to my must-try list!

This looks fantastic!! Chex mix is a snack that I can never really stop eating until the bag is gone…these flavor combos sound so good together, much better than store bought! I can imagine the house will smell lovely too!

I made the pumpkin maple chex mix and nothing turned out to be crunchy, great taste but very chewy. I wondered if you are supposed to leave the lid off the crock pot so that it will dry out more?

It is very chewy and not that crunchy. If you read the text part of the blog post, I talked about that. Leaving the lid off may make it more crunchy but I haven’t experimented with it that way. I did indicate that I left it out on baking sheets to ‘air out’ overnight. But you’re right, it’s chewy. We loved that part of it. Thanks for trying the recipe!

How do you think it would be to replace the maple syrup with molasses?

I would keep some maple in for some sweetness and then add a dash of molasses. I think molasses would be a great touch!

One more (silly) question … maple syrup…not the same as pancake syrup, right?

In this recipe you can use either real maple or pancake syrup. I used the later (cheaper!)

Thanks for your super fast response! I cannot wait to make this. (come on, 5:00!)

Mine’s almost done..I think mine came out too soggy~ Does it matter what kind of chex cereal I use? I used the wheat chex. And I could not find pumpkin spice so I used apple spice instead. Smells good though~

I mentioned this in the post, but this is not the really crispy and crunchy traditional Chex mix. It’s chewy. I wouldn’t call it soggy per se but it’s not your traditional mix that’s crunchy because with the maple syrup and the butter, there’s no way it would come out crispy and crunchy no matter how you make it. But if you’d like to pop it in the oven at 300F on baking sheets, it may help it firm up, although I just let mine sit out overnight exposed to air. Thanks for trying the recipe.

Thank you so much! Our friends loved it! It did firm up after letting it sit out for a bit. Will be making it again! =D

That’s wonderful to hear! Glad it worked out well and you’ll make it again!

I am in the process of making the chex mix without the graham crackers. How do I store this? Can I enclose it in a metal tin, glas jar, plastic bowl to stay fresh? Does it matter which one? I want to use this for a Halloween party Saturday evening :)

Not really, no. A gallon-sized Ziplock is easy and disposable. Keep it exposed to air for 2 to 12 hours if you want after making as it will firm up slightly more. Enjoy!

Crock pot cover on or off!!!!?????

I kept it covered.

I did this in the oven at 250 for 1 hour and stirred every 15 minutes (as suggested.. also how I make my regular chex mix) and it turned out WONDERFUL! Every piece is crispy and has a candy coating. My husband LOVES IT. Thank you so much :)

Glad it came out wonderfully you and that you and your husband are loving it!! That’s awesome!

Okay, I just made the Maple Pumpkin Pie Spice Chex Mix. Oh, my!! It is so AWESOME! I forgot the pretzels because my mother-in-law was talking my ear off while I was trying to mix this up, but it doesn’t matter! It’s still great! I made mine in the oven, stirring every 15 minutes, like traditional Chex Mix. It worked beautifully!! Will definitely be making it again and other of your snack mix creations! Thanks so much!

I forgot the pretzels because my mother-in-law was talking my ear off <--- LOL, it happens :) But regardless, glad you loved this and that it came out great for you! If you try any other recipes, keep me posted how things go!

How long would you recommend in the oven at 250? One hour?

This was a big hit when I made it for a fall bridal shower recently. I cooked it while decorating so the whole place smelled of awesome pumpkin spice. I have made it 2 times now and it has turned out crispy like traditional Chex mix. I forgot to add the brown sugar to the butter syrup mix so I sprinkled it on half way through the cooking process and stirred it in well. It was done in 1.5 hours (maybe my crock pot runs hot or maybe because it was more dry?). Amazing. Thanks so much for the delicious recipe. Soon to become a fall tradition at my house.

Thanks for trying the recipe and I’m glad it came out great for you! Crockpots vary SO much in their heat intensity so yours just maybe runs a bit hotter than mine. Glad it’s a fall staple for you!

Great idea, but after cooling mine seems a bit limp, not crispy. Maybe it will be good as cereal…

I mentioned in the post, “The texture of the cereal is more chewy than crunchy. If you’re looking for the traditional, very dry, crunchy Chex mix, this isn’t it.” So it’s not going to be super crispy and is definitely more chewy but I wouldn’t call that limp. Maybe yours needed a bit longer in the slow cooker since they all vary in their power and intensity and that would have dried it out a bit more. Thanks for trying the recipe.

Is there any way to make this dairy free. Would other oils work or would you have to use butter? I would like to make this for someone who is dairy/gluten free.

I haven’t tried doing it without butter but you could try canola/veg oil and see what happens!

Is there a substitute for the maple syrup? My family loves pumpkin but not maple syrup.

I haven’t tried honey but that would probably work, or agave. No personal experience but just a hunch those would both work.

Oh. My. Goodness. This recipe turned out amazing! i absolutely adore all things pumpkin any time of year. I did switch it up a little because i wanted a little more of that scrumptious pumpkin flavor so i decided to actually add a bit of canned pumpkin puree top the mix. i found that if i warmed the puree and creamed it with the syrup, butter, and sugar i was able to mix it right in and got a pretty even coating with very little clumping.

However, i did run into trouble with the silicone spoon. It just didn’t have enough fortitude to get the job done so i ended up switching to a wooden spoon halfway through. Had a little breaking of the chex but nothing that was too noticeable.

Thanks for trying the recipe and I’m glad it came out great for you! Glad to know you were able to add pumpkin puree, too!

It’s been far too long since my last slow cooker recipe.

It was both a blessing and a curse that I fired up my Crock-Pot and made this mix. Holy addicting.

I’ve always had a thing for Chex Mix. All the textures and flavors make it such a great snack. I decided to put a fall spin on it with this blend.

I made it by combining two types of Chex, graham crackers, honey-roasted cashews and peanuts, pretzels, dried cranberries and cherries, and over the top I drizzled a mixture of melted butter, maple syrup, brown sugar, vanilla, and pumpkin pie spice.

The maple flavor really shines, and I used one tablespoon of pumpkin pie spice, but if you want to boost the pumpkin flavor, use two tablespoons or more.

The nuts and pretzels provide crunch and there’s a salty-and-sweet component that I can’t resist. The texture of the cereal is more chewy than crunchy. If you’re looking for the traditional, very dry, crunchy Chex mix, this isn’t it.

The recipe is extremely adaptable. I use two types of Chex because I refuse to buy multiple $5 dollar boxes of cereal and open them for just a cup or two. If you want to add in Cheerios, Golden Grahams, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, or similar, they’d all be great. Same with the graham crackers, I had a package open, chopped them up, and tossed them in. They don’t hold up as well as Chex, but they’re still tasty.

I used honey-roasted cashews and honey-roasted peanuts because I had them on hand and open, but if you want to use almonds, walnuts, or omit the nuts, feel free.

I used dried cherries and dried cranberries because I just made Cinnamon Sugar Candied Nuts Trail Mix with them, but golden or regular raisins would be lovely. If you’re not a fan of dried fruit, omit.

The recipe sounds like it makes a ton, but actually it doesn’t. I filled up 3 one-quart baggies. One for us, one for teachers, and one for coaches. It’s so irresistible and will be your new favorite snack.
